Scanning & Planning
We began the school year by taking a closer look at recent and historical student data which included information from the Student Learning Survey, Foundation Skills Assessment, Graduation Reports, Graduation Assessments in Numeracy and Literacy (GNA 10, GLA 10, GLA 12), International Baccalaureate Results, and School Reporting. Upon initial review of the data, one can easily conclude that the majoriy of Richmond Secondary students are confident successful learners who are thriving in their learning:
- RSS graduation rate is consistently well-above the district and provincial average with a graduation rate of 86% in 2023-2024, of which 85% of those graduates achieved "Honour" status (better than B average)
- RSS IB Diploma completion rate is consistently over 90% with 93% of students successfully earning an IB Diploma in 2023-2024
- RSS students demonstrating "Proficient" and "Extending" proficiency on the Graduation Numeracy Assessment (GNA) is consistently above provincial and district averages
- RSS students demonstrating "Proficient" and "Extending" proficiency on the Graduation Literacy Assessment (GLA) is consistently above provincial and district averages
While impressive, we were more curious and wondered about our struggling learners, and took a closer look at who these "Emerging" and "Developing" learners were. We uncovered that these learners were diverse in their backgrounds, had varied experiences, and had a range of needs. By focusing our inquiry on supporting the diverse learning needs of students in our school and continuing our work on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), we believe that we can create and foster inclusive learning environments that support and allow all of our students to grow and develop their skills and to thrive in their learning.
