Literacy Next Steps

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

The Literacy Support Facilitator and Grade 8 teachers have continued their collaborative work on supporting literacy development by preparing resources and developing an action plan for the incoming grade 8 students.  This plan will include but not limited to the following strategies:

  • Using graphic organizers and templates to help students organize and retain information effectively
  • Integrating content across subjects to deepen connections and relate new ideas to prior knowledge
  • Teach students to identify main ideas and supporting details to improve understanding.
  • Providing scaffolding and sentence frames to support English language learners and emerging students.
  • Using regular assessments and student reflections to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

Through targeted literacy instruction, students become more engaged in reading tasks and develop greater confidence in their ability to understand and analyze challenging material.  The action also promotes equitable outcomes by providing focused support for underperforming learners and students with language barriers, ensuring all students have opportunities to succeed.  In addition, the literacy skills developed are transferable across subject areas, helping students think critically, communicate effectively, and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
