Our Learning
We began this process by reviewing the I.B. Learner Profile with a group of graduating IB Diploma students in late June 2017. These students discussed each of the ten attributes, identified the ones they felt were most important for their future and how they have grown as people and as learners in each area. The students were also asked for suggestions on what were the key attributes for all students at RHS. At various times in 2016-2017, our staff discussed our purpose as educators and what we want for each of our students when they leave our classrooms and our school. Staff again discussed, articulated and aattempted to define the competencies we want for all students and this was part of the focus of our staff retreat on September 21 and 22, 2017. Throughout the year, we worked with groups of students, staff and parents to further explore the attributes of a 21st century learner that we hope for all students. As part of the implementation on B.C.'s new curriculum, we erected District core competency posters in every classroom and in other areas of the school. We underscored the "notice, name and nurture" expectations for all staff. As a staff, we committed to supporting students' in their understanding, reflection and self-assessment of their communication, creative and critical thinking and personal and social competencies.
During the 2017-2018 year, dedicated student and staff focus groups worked on various iterations and drafts of an RHS Learner Profile. Students from the focus group visited several classes and led and facilitated conversations about our draft work. Our observations are that this is a topic/theme that students engage with readily and enjoy discussing. At the end of the year, we created a poster and invited teachers to use and post the learner profile in their classes. At the same time, a different group of staff had created a group of six posters clarifying our school's "common language" on the Ministry Core Competencies.
In 2018-2019, we are looking to make explicit connections between the RHS Learner Profile, the IB Learner Profile and the Ministry's Core Competencies. To have any chance at being relevant and meaningful over time, students and staff must see the connections. We will invite all of our senior students to reflect on their learning, using these attributes to describe their journey in "capstone" style video presentations.
In 2019-2020, we are continuing to imbed the common language of the RHS Learner Profile and the Ministry's Core Competencies across all curricular areas. We will also begin the process of highlighting certain attributes for more specific focus - this year with "resiliency". We will invite students to reflect on their learning, using these attributes and competencies, to describe their learning and growth.
In 2020-2021, our school is grappling with significant organizational and scheduling changes to manage all of the health requirements of learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. We will strive to sustain the good work of the past few years by increasing the visibility of our Learner Profile and working to imbed the language in our daily work with students. With reduced instructional time and student-to-staff and student-to-student contacts, it seems that more than ever before, we need to be clear on our core purpose of developing responsible, caring, reflective and resilient young people who can think and communicate effectively.
