FRENCH

FRENCH 8

Parlez-vous français? French 8 will be using a new B.C. curriculum, but teachers will be keeping all the fun games, dialogues, short videos and songs that make learning a new language fun. Communi-Quête 1 is the introductory-level program used in French 8. All four areas of language learning will be included: speaking/responding, listening, writing and reading, with a focus on communicating in a meaningful context.  French vocabulary will be expanded through plays, powerpoint presentations, film and group conversations. Students will experience Francophone food, music and stories from around the world. The past, present,  imperative and future tenses will be introduced. Students have the option of purchasing a supplementary workbook for French 8 for $5.   For more information, check out: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/core-french/8

FRENCH 9

French 9  will be using a new B.C. curriculum and students will build on the French they learned in elementary school and French 8. Communi-Quete 2 continues to present French language elements in a meaningful manner to encourage communication among the students. Using the present, imperative, past and future tenses will enhance students' abilities to read, write and understand French. Pair and group work will allow the students to work cooperatively on unit presentations focusing on the francophone world, sports, health, retro looks at the 60s, 70s and 80s and a unit of French music. FRENCH 10

In French 10, students will be using Communi-Quête 3, which includes a textbook and student workbook. Communi-Quête 3 involves students in cross-curricular themes with hands-on activities and multi-dimensional tasks. Cooperative group work, communicative activities and oral/aural skill development are stressed. Students in the following courses have the option to a) purchase a supplementary workbook costing approximately $5 for their own use or b) use the class set of workbooks as reference material. The class set of workbooks cannot be written in.

FRENCH 11

A new program called Bien Dit 3 from Holt publishing is being used this year. Students will  review the present, past and imperfect tenses. The future, conditional, subjunctive and plus perfect tenses will be introduced in a communicative setting. They will enhance their grammar, pronunciation and listening skills through the thematic topics of sports, employment, vacations, art and literature. Students will follow a media program to enhance their listening skills and a Francophone culture to explore French around the world. There are extra learning activities available to the students on-line. Students in this course have the option to purchase a supplementary workbook costing $21. 

NOTE: French Immersion students transferring to RSS in Grade 10 might consider taking an elective course rather than core French 11 due to suitability and timetabling issues.

FRENCH 12

The textbook called Bien Dit 3 from Holt publishing is being used this year. Students will review the present, past and imperfect tenses. The future anterior, conditional past, past subjunctive and plus perfect tenses will be introduced in a communicative setting. They will enhance their grammar, pronunciation and listening skills through the thematic topics of the environment, art, relationships and literature. Students will follow a media program to enhance their listening skills and learn about Francophone foods, music, social issues and culture in Africa, Québec and Louisiana. Students in this course have the option to purchase a supplementary workbook costing $21.

IB FRENCH SL 12

Voulez-vous vivre à la française? Parler la langue d'amour? Eh bien, voici le programme pour vous!

IB French 11 and 12 SL will immerse the student in the language and culture of the Francophone world. Following the three core themes as prescribed by IB (global issues, social relationships and communication & media), the course will cover a multitude of subjects as well as supplemental topics including foods, festivals and cultural diversity.  As oral and written fluency are the objectives of IB French, instruction will be conducted in French and students will be expected to speak French as much as possible. The course is intended for students with good work habits and a strong academic standing in French 10 as the pace is accelerated. Please see your counsellor or your current French teacher if you have any questions about IB French.

IB FRENCH HL 11
IB FRENCH HL 12

IB French 11 and 12 HL will be integrated with the SL program due to enrollment, but they follow a similar IB curricula.  The difference in SL and HL is the depth of the assessments and the criteria for the IB Exam in Grade 12. In addition, HL students will study works of Francophone literature as a signficant component of their assessment. Novels will be distributed to IB HL 11 students to read and analyze on their own and assessments will be facilitated and guided by the teacher in the Grade 12 year. Please confirm with the French department head before registering for HL French.

JAPANESE

 

 

JAPANESE 9

This course is an introductory study of Japanese. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • read and write both hiragana, katakana and some kanji.
  • listen and understand basic native speech.
  • speak about family and personal experience.

Students will explore and experience Japanese food, music, art and popculture through various class activities.

JAPANESE 10

Recommended: Japanese 9

This course is intended to improve and expand the students’ knowledge of Japanese. New grammar will be introduced to add sophistication to students’ writing. Oral skills will also be further developed. Culture will be explored through food, music, art and film.

JAPANESE 11
JAPANESE 12

This course will enable students to develop an understanding of the values, customs, and other elements of Japanese culture. This course should also enable students to increase their ability to communicate effectively, and potentially to take advantage of vocational and leisure opportunities and/or meet post-secondary requirements.

IB JAPANESE HL 11
IB JAPANESE HL 12 

This is a two-year course designed for students with extensive experience with the Japanese language. It is for students who would like to use their Japanese in the future, with an emphasis on oral and written skills. HL is intended for students who have near-native Japanese abilities. Japanese for daily use and for literary purposes will be studied. A novel will be issued for self-study during the year and at the end of the course, students will have two written and two oral IB exams to complete in Grade 12.

IB JAPANESE SL 11
IB JAPANESE SL 12

This is a two-year course designed for high ability, highly motivated students who have good work habits and strong standing in Japanese 10. Sophistication in writing and speaking will be developed through more exposure to written and aural texts. At the end of the two-year course, students will have two written and two oral IB exams to complete in Grade 12.

MANDARIN

Students are encouraged to study Mandarin and join over 1 billion people in the world! Both non-heritage and hertiage students are welcome in the Mandarin program at Richmond Secondary School. If you have previous background, knowledge and education in Chinese and this is your first time taking a Mandarin course at RSS, please consult the Mandarin teacher and your counsellor before selecting the appropriate course.

Students in Mandarin 9-12 use an optional workbook for Chinese character practice, listening quizzes, grammar exercises, and comprehension questions based on the textbook and the fee is approximately $22.

MANDARIN 9

Mandarin 9 is an introductory course designed for students who are beginning learners of the language. Students with formal education in Mandarin should not take this course. The four core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese will be introduced and developed, with a focus on real life contexts. Simplified characters and the phonetic system of Hanyu Pinyin will be used. In addition, students will explore Chinese culture through films, music and hands-on projects. Topics will include greetings, family, the world, jobs and school. By the end of this course, students will be able to write and converse in simple, clear sentences.

MANDARIN 10

Students with some knowledge of Simplified Chinese characters and Hanyu Pinyin will feel comfortable at this level. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese will be developed, as well as an appreciation of Chinese culture through films, music and hands-on projects. Topics vary, but may include clothing styles, vacations, hobbies and school. By the end of this course, students will be able to compose sentences to form paragraphs, orally and in writing.

MANDARIN 11

Students who have successfully completed Mandarin 10 or had formal schooling in a Chinese environment should choose this course. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese will be developed and extended. Activites will include projects and discussions and topics may include food, health, shopping and home life.  By the end of this course, students will be able to write and converse in paragraphs. 

MANDARIN 12

Students who have successfully completed Mandarin 11 or had recent, formal schooling in a Chinese environment should choose this course. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese will be honed. Activities will include discussions, presentations and film screenings and topics may include customs and traditions, travel, family and community. By the end of Mandarin 12, students will be able to write a variety of compositions and conduct formal presentations.

IB MANDARIN SL and HL 11

Students should have a good foundation in Mandarin Chinese before pursuing this internationally-recognized and rigourous two-year IB curriculum. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese will be extended. Students will study Chinese culture through the core IB language topics of communication and media, social relationships and global issues.  Higher Level HL Mandarin is for students with a strong Chinese proficiency and excellent work habits. The HL involves different oral and written final exams in Grade 12 and an in-depth Chinese literature study.
 

IB MANDARIN SL and HL 12

This is the second year of a two-year IB Mandarin course. Listening, speaking, reading and writing skills will be extended in preparation for the final IB exams near the end of the Grade 12 year. IB options include cultural diversity, customs and traditions, health, leisure and science and technology. HL students will further develop their appreciation and analysis of Chinese literature.

Please note that students have the option of purchasing the Level 1 Workbook for Spanish 9/10 and the Level 2 Workbook for Spanish 11/12/IB for approximately $25 each.

SPANISH 9

And what would Spanish be without food (churros), dance (merengue) and music (flamenco)? Learn Spanish and find out why it’s the third most spoken language in the world…

SPANISH 10

Recommended: Successful completion of Spanish 9. 

Did you know that Jennifer López, Shakira, Sergio García, Demi Lovato, George López and Lionel Messi all come from Hispanic backgrounds? Learn about the contributions that these celebrities have made in the world of television, movies, music, and sports. We’ll look at more artwork from Diego Rivera, Francisco de Goya, Salvador Dalí and Fernando Botero. What does a Hispanic family look like and why do they have such long names? Ever wonder why there’s an eagle on the Mexican flag? Which countries use “pesos” for money? Celebrate “Cinco de mayo” with piñatas or maracas. Let’s continue on our journey of discovery through Spain and Latin America, and find out how people live, work and shop…

SPANISH 11

Recommended: Successful completion of Spanish 9 and 10 or their equivalent.

So now that you have studied some Spanish, what are you going to do with it?  How about reading some poetry and singing some songs?  Find out how Arabic has influenced the development of the Spanish language. Did you say you like food?  Then you’ve come to the right place!  Paella, tortillas, empanadas, gazpacho, enchiladas…we’ve got it all.  And not only will you get hungry talking about them, you’ll also be cooking up a storm as you prepare a dish in front of the class…all in Spanish!  ¡Buen provecho! 

SPANISH 12

Recommended: Successful completion of Spanish 11.

In this final year of Spanish, we’ll start with a celebration of festivals…learn about the rich history, lengthy preparations and religious and cultural importance of major holidays like Navidad, la Semana Santa and Día de los muertos. Then we’ll look at issues that directly affect the people of Latin America – natural disasters, environmental problems, and medical care. And now that you have learned so much Spanish, we’ll watch some television programs and even a movie in Spanish.

 

IB SPANISH HL 11

Recommended: A minimum of a 70% in Spanish 10 or its equivalent.

Pues, ¡esta clase es para ti!  ¡Aquí sólo se habla español!  This is the first year of a two-year program for motivated students who would like to challenge themselves further in learning Spanish. They are expected to complete the Spanish 11 coursework, as well as do additional readings and presentations to prepare for the various assessment components in IB Spanish 12. There is a major literature component that includes short stories and a novel study. 

IB SPANISH SL 11
