English 8 will be using a new B.C. curriculum. This course focuses on the connection of seven big ideas to language and communication skills (writing, reading, speaking, listening, storytelling, analysis) through the exposure to, and appreciation of a variety of literary genres: the novel, poetry, short stories, and plays. Using the integrated approach to the teaching of the curriculum, students will be encouraged to explore the connections between what they are learning in English and their other subjects. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 9
English 9 will be using a new B.C. curriculum. This course builds on the big ideas and skills foundations established in English 8. The course covers the genres introduced in English 8 and emphasis is placed on the writing process (writing and recognizing different kinds of paragraphs), reading comprehension, and oral listening skills. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 10
At Richmond Secondary School, all English 10 students will continue to build on their writing, reading, speaking and listening skills while developing their postive personal and cultural identities, communication and critical thinking competencies. All English 10 classes will integrate the New Media and Spoken Language learning standards. Students have the choice of the following two courses. Please note, both of these options will meet the needs of all post-secondary programs. Students considering enrolling in the IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11 are encouraged to selected option A.
ENGLISH 10 Option A - Focused Literary Studies and Composition
In Literary Studies 10 all students will explore the literature of a particular era, geographical area, or theme and the study of literature in general. The course allows students to delve more deeply into literature as they explore specific themes, periods, authors, cultures or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of genres and media. In Composition 10, students will work individually and collaboratively to explore and create coherent, purposeful compositions. Students will read and study compositions by other writers and consider a variety of styles as models for the development of their writing. The course builds students’ writing competencies by introducing them to varied structures, forms, and styles of compositions. Students have opportunities to individually and collaboratively study, create, and write original pieces, exploring audience and purpose. They also develop their craft through processes of drafting, reflecting, and revising.
ENGLISH 10 Option B - Focused Literary Studies and Creative Writing
In Literary Studies 10 all students will explore the literature of a particular era, geographical area, or theme and the study of literature in general. The course allows students to delve more deeply into literature as they explore specific themes, periods, authors, cultures or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of genres and media. Creative Writing 10 is designed for students who have an interest in creative expression through language. The course provides students opportunities to build their writing skills through the exploration of identity, memory, and story in a range of genres. Within a supportive community of writers, students will collaborate and develop their skills through writing and design processes. This course is intentionally grounded in the sampling of writing processes, inviting students to express themselves creatively as they experiments with, reflect on and practice their writing.
English 11 is an academic course which aims to assist students in developing advanced skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as to encourage students to realize their intellectual and emotional potential through a sophisticated study of literature in all genres. Students are encouraged to read appreciatively and critically in a variety of forms. Most of the lessons and assignments arise from assigned reading. Evaluation is based on oral contributions, tests and compositions of various kinds and lengths.
These courses are intended for students who plan to enter post-secondary education at the college level, or who plan to enter the workforce directly after graduation. These courses focus on communication skills and experiences which are applicable to a variety of career choices. As well, students study a variety of genres in literature to further their enjoyment and appreciation of the language.
*In June, students will write a Provincial Exam worth 40% of their course mark as required for graduation.
These courses are accepted at: Vancouver Vocational Institute (VVI), British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT-Trades only), and most programs at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and local colleges. Students should check with their counsellor that they have the correct grade 12 English course for the post-secondary school that they wish to attend.
This course is a continuation of skills acquired in English 11. Students will gain some experience with a considerable number of essays, novels, short stories, plays and poems. Most of the lessons and assignments arise from assigned reading. Evaluation is based on oral contributions, tests and compositions of various kinds and lengths. *In June, students will write a Provincial Exam worth 40% of their course mark as required for graduation.
Composition 11 provides additional opportunities to become competent and fluent writers. Students will practise different genres of writing (e.g. essays, research projects, formal speeches, resumés, business letters, etc.). Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, editing, and proofreading skills are emphasized. Composition 11 is recommended for students who wish to improve their writing skills in preparation for English 11, English 12 and post-secondary studies.
This course is particularly suited to those who have interest and ability in English and who intend to go on to further studies in literature at university. The course covers literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the twenty-first century. It contains representative selections of the works of most great authors set against a background of the social history of their times. Drama from the Elizabethan, Eighteenth Century and the Modern Age is included, as are philosophical concepts and literary characteristics of the various periods. Accurate recall and quick comprehension are assets to a student in this course which is evaluated on a continuing basis.
IB ENGLISH AND THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE
HIGHER LEVEL 11 LITERATURE
This course is for students who would like to explore knowledge through a fairly extensive list of literary works, some of which are world literature choices. Oral and written skills are stressed so that students may successfully master university courses. Students completing these courses may get credit for first year university standing. The IB English course is completed over two years.
IB ENGLISH HL 12 LITERATURE
The second year of the IB English courses is single blocked at a standard level. There is a choice of levels in the grade 12 year only.
Students will receive their IB 12 credit as well as Provincial English 12 credit upon writing the English 12 Provincial Exam.

This course is part of the IB core and is required to achieve an IB Diploma and highly recommended to all students who are going to pursue a university education. One of the main objectives of the course is to give students a forum in which they may question, reflect on, judge, consider, and weigh the validity of the knowledge claims made in each subject area of the curriculum. Students, as the independent thinkers that they have to become, need to address questions such as the following:
How does one make valid, independent choices?
Is the historical knowledge presented in history books accurate?
Does the acquisition of mathematical skills make us better thinkers?
What is ethically proper for me to do?
This is a required course for all students who are on the IB Diploma Program. However, all students with good writing and oral skills, and an inquisitive mind, will benefit from taking this course.
Students who are not doing a IB Diploma are able to get IB credit for it; however, enrollment will only be granted if their is space as first preference will go to full IB Diploma students.
