Personal Learning Time (PLT) 4-Week Trial

The staff at Richmond Secondary School is interested in helping our students grow as independent, self-regulating and self-motivated learners. Similarly, we want our students to develop as resilient, capable and balanced young people.  In order to facilitate these goals, we are introducing "Personal Learning Time" into our schedule over a 4-week trial on January 30 and February 6-13-20. All RHS students will experience once-a-week Personal Learning Time or PLT, built into our Thursday bell schedule over the next four weeks.

On the first two PLT days, students will be assigned to one of their current classes, with that teacher. However, students can choose to work on any homework, projects, reading or review of their choosing. On the final two PLT days in the trial, students will get to choose what classroom and teacher they go to by "signing up" with that teacher. Teachers will be available during PLT to support, guide and help. Teachers will not be teaching new material during PLT. This is valuable time within our regular bell schedule for students to get work done, get help from teachers, meet with peers, reduce their 'schoolwork at home' demands and manage their stress.

During PLT, students can work on any project, learning, review or learning activity of their choosing.

During PLT, students cannot leave the school, hang-out in the hallways, socialize or play online games.

The PLT Days bell schedule:

Period 1 - 8:30 to 9:35am

PLT - 9:40 to 10:35am

Period 2 - 10:40 to 11:45am

LUNCH - 11:45 to 12:30pm

Period 3 - 12:30 to 1:35pm

Period 4 - 1:40 to 2:45pm

This idea was also discussed at our PAC meeting on January 16. At the end of the 4-week trial, we will survey students and staff to see if PLT was successful and worth including in our schedule on a permanent basis.
