Richmond Secondary School will join thousands across the province and millions around the world by participating in an emergency earthquake drill on Thursday, October 18 at 10:18am. The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is intended to raise awareness and remind people to get prepared. While potential earthquake hazards depend on your location, everywhere in British Columbia is considered at high risk in relation to the rest of Canada. For example, on January 26, 1700, a magnitude 9 earthquake (similar to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake off the coast of Japan) shook the entire province as well as Washington, Oregon, and California, and generated a massive tsunami. Many earth scientists believe that we are vulnerable to another major earthquake.
What we do now will determine our quality of life after our next big earthquake. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly? Does your family have a communication plan? Is your family prepared? Find out more at: https://www.shakeoutbc.ca/whyparticipate/
