As widely reported in the media, there was a tragic and violent incident at Abbotsford Secondary School on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 1. In what appears to be a random attack, two female students were stabbed by an unknown assailant and one young girl has since passed away. The perpetrator was detained by school staff and arrested by the police. This is a horrific and unimaginable tragedy for any school community. As Abby Senior is also an IB Diploma school, some RHS staff know some staff there and we have reached out to express our condolences and support. If your teen is asking questions, it is okay to talk about the incident in a calm and objective manner. If you notice your teen or one of their peers is struggling, please reach out to an RHS counsellor.
As always, the safety of every member of our Richmond Secondary School community is very important to us, and something we take very seriously. We also practice emergency drills, including "High Danger" exercises in coordination with the RCMP, regularly during the school year. As a parent, if you have questions, please contact our principal, Mr. Allison. For some helpful suggestions during times of tragedy, please read the "Guidelines for Parents" attachment below.
